| Many organizations’ destruction policies do not include documents in electronic format. But according to PIPEDA, they should. PIPEDA applies to any media—including paper documents, hard drives, tapes etc,…that may store confidential information. Donating, selling or throwing computers, media and other electronic storage devices into the garbage is not a secure method of disposing of retired equipment. Physical hard drive destruction is the only completely secure way to dispose electronic data—leaving an unreadable pile of debris impossible to reconstruct.
